What is a good city in Mexico, or i guess really anywhere in latin america, that i could live in for a year or 2 and experience the culture of that coutnry. I know enough spanish to get by, but that is the main reason i woudl go, to become fluent in the language. How long do you have to stay in a country to pick up the language? How long if you know some of it already? Anyways, where is a nice little city somewhere in mexico / latin america?

Hi. Your question is quite difficult, but I'll try to answer as best as I can. If you know enough Spanish to get by you'll need minimum 3 months and maybe 6. A year will suffice assuming that you will also be taking some lessons as it will not be enough just living there unless you have a job or a lot of contact with the locals. As far as experiencing the culture, there are plenty of places you can go that may let you do that, but also consider that any city in Mexico will give you a good share of culture. There are many flavors of culture in Mexico. I reccommend Veracruz, an often underplayed city in Mexico, on the Gulf, great food, close to the Pyramids and not many tourists. Stay away from San Miguel de Allende as there are too many American expats. Try Leon, Guanajuato or Morelia, Michoacan or even Queretaro, Queretaro. These cities are well known in Mexico and are not so large, plus they are close to Mexico City and to Guadalajara for a good mix of culture. Try the website attached. Hope this helps.

It depends on what kind of places you like and what part of the mexical culture you'd like to know, I recomend you Zacatecas, a nice city if you like the colonial like buildings, veracruz y you like the sea, this two are mayor cities and you'll find all what you may need and quite secure, if you what a deeper experience, you may try Cuetzalan in puebla state, a beautiful place rain forest like, but it's a small town where there are not spanish schools but you'll be really in a place where the ancient culture can be breathen.

cuernavaca is the best choice, its near mexico city, its not expensive , has a great wheather and is really american friendly, also you can find a lot of schools where you can learn spanish, the only bad thing is that the nightlife really sucks, but you have acapulco at only 3 hours by car

go to visitemorelos.com and find out.

If your are considering places outside of Mexico. Granada Nicaragua is one of my favorite places in the world. It's cheap and not dangerous. Beautiful city, lots to do.
